Urban Renewal Processes in the Neoliberal Era

Co-author of the book.

The concept of "urban renewal" is not new. It refers to a distinct domain of activity within the field of urban planning, one that should be understood as part of global urbanization trends over the past century. The meaning of this concept, and the actions derived from it, vary from one period to another. What has changed dramatically in the current era is the general public’s familiarity with the concept and their involvement in urban renewal processes. This trend is also linked to private funding sources in urban renewal, which grant both residents and the private entrepreneurial sector the opportunity to become partners in the process. Merhav Mikuah (“Bargaining Space”) examines the central trends and key concepts in the field of urban renewal in Israel and around the world.
